Try disconnecting the car battery, this sometimes resets the signal causing the light. If a problem still exists, the light will go back on. There is something in the car called a service plug or wire. There is a way to set this wire so that the engine light will flash a certain number of times indicating what the problem is. You have to do the research to find out where this plug is in your car. In my old car the connector or plug was behind the glove box.

Welcome to the wonderful world of computer modules in automobiles.

Unfortunately what you are probably seeing is a result of computer code fault registration. When you ran out of gas ( or even more annoying sometimes just didn't close the gas cap tight enough after putting gas in the car), a pressure sensor in the tank will send an error code to the computer control module. In some cars they are built to be self correcting but in your case the code has to be reset by someone with a code reader/reset device.

Most shops can do it, some will do it for free but most charge about $30-$40 to hook up a reader.
It doesn't impact the operation of the vehicle but it is irritating and makes it so you may not know when a serious error code is recorded.

Hope this helps.

It may have set a fuel trim lean code when it ran out of gas and you might not have tighten the gas cap enough. take one cable off batt and connect it to other term for 10 min. this will clear the codes .only other way is with scan tool.

It's saying that you need to check your engine for some problems. Like maybe the the oil needs to be changed, or your battery. Or it could just be saying, "HEY! I'M OUT OF GAS!" Hope it helps.
