Did winning the last game save his butt again?

2007-01-01 07:35:11 · 10 answers · asked by Travis W 3 in Sports Football (American)

I guess he is staying, Ford won't fire him.

Detroit Lions president Matt Millen told a small group of reporters Tuesday he's received indications from ownership that he'll be back to run the franchise in 2007.

Millen said Lions owner William Clay Ford told him to keep doing his job.

Detroit is an NFL-worst 24-72 since Millen took control of football operations in 2001. The Lions beat Dallas on Sunday, finishing an NFC-low 3-13, and the win cost them the top pick in the draft, which will go to Oakland.

Millen said quitting was not an option he considered despite criticism of the team's dismal performance in his tenure.

"I'll never quit," Millen said in a story posted Tuesday by The Detroit News. "I can't do that. I don't even consider that.

"It's the way I'm made."

Asked why he wouldn't quit, Millen replied: "You're given a job, regardless of what it is. You keep on working and trying to get the thing done."

Matt Millen, and the Ford family (the family that owns the Lions) are good friends, which is why he got the job in the first place, and which is why he won't get fired.

Detroit Lions ownership sucks, they don't care if the team wins or loses, as long as they turn a profit. If Lions fans stopped coming to the games, and stopped watching the games, and stopped buying merchandise, and put a hole in the pocket book of the ownership, then they would make some positive changes, but until then the Lions will be the Lions.

The Lions could be 0-16 and Millen would keep the job. The fans keep going don't they? The Ford family keeps making money off the team don't they? So why should they fire him when for all the complaining from the fans they don't do a dare thing to stop taking money out of the team's pocket?

Winning is irrelevant in Detroit. Millen has his job, because the ownership doesn't care to do what it takes to win.

Since it's the family of Henry Ford that owns the team, you would think they would build the Lions Ford tough, like their autos supposedly are...

Because the Fords are not willing to pay him to leave. He should resign anyway he is probably the worst GM in NFL history.
