I dont have anything for free to recommend.... and i also won't recommend.
free antivirus program normally can only detect but unable to remove the infected files. else it is not strong enough and they might be a virus themselves.... if really got such a good free program... the companies like norton, trends.. can just close down.
if it is becos of cost($$) you are looking for a free software.. i recommend you to try Cyber Scrub Antivirus. it comes with a 5 years subscription fee waived, you need not renew its license yearly for 5 years with just one year cost.
Or you can consider The Shield Pro 2007, the software and the renewal is much more cheaper compare to most antivirus program. U can also consider Privatefirewall to removes spyware, adware, and other web-based threats to protect your PC from unauthorized access, information theft and diminished system performance.

The best place to delete virus' for free is at pandasoftware.com
you do not have to downlaod the software just the active X. it is the best antivirus and will disinfect all the virus' found.
an alternative is trend micro's free online scan but i prefere panda's.
if you want a free antivirus then comodo is the best free one and you can also get a free comodo fireewall.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

If You need really Free Anti Virus software then Go for http://www.clamwin.com . It is an open source software so you don't need to spend money at all.
