Are there any links between metabolism and sleep? I heard a friend say that a person with low metabolism requires more sleep, and that it is harder to wake up for people with low metabolism than high metabolism. Is there any truth to this statement?

Metabolism is the rate at which you use your food. It is controlled by the thyroid gland. Both over and under active thyroid gland can cause sleep loss. Proper amount of sleep is needed for proper metabolism. Low thyroid (hypothyroid) can cause sluggishness and tiredness. It is not that hypothyroidism requires more sleep or that they dont wake up as easily, it is that they feel tired and slow.Depression also goes along with hypothyrodism which also makes one seem to need more sleep

Ever observe how teenagers sleep? They have relatively high metabolisms compared to the rest of us, but they tend to sleep longer. Older individuals, who have a lower metabolism, actually sleep less. If there were any connection to metabolism (and I haven't seen any) it would be the opposite of what you are asking.

No I don't think this is true - sleep patterns are determined by many things and I have not heard of a link between them and metabolism, any effect would just be a fraction anyway

no there's no link between metabolism and sleep. your freind misunderstood the fact that during sleeping the indvidual metabolism is low. but when a person is sleepy he doesn't have to have low metabolism...on the contrary sometimes when u eat you feel sleepy becuase your blood will move from your head to your gut to digest food and digestion is part of the body metabolism.
