Get some stick-on thermometer strips, and put them on your thermostat housing. That will tell you the actual temperature of your motor.

Be sure to check your lower radiator hose, which is the low pressure side of your cooling system. If the hose gets soft, it can close up and restrict coolant flow.

when water pump is bad it does one of the following:
1 leaks.
2 rattling noise
3 do not moves the coolant through

the thermostat temperature for opening MUST be 180 degrees
lower settings will keep the entire system at high temperature all time, because will give no time to radiator to cool what it have in the proses of cooling..

if the temperature gage have movement then is good(or close to be good)

I will remind You that the upper hose of the radiator is suppose to be PRETTY TIGHT and as HOT AS 190 DEGREES when the thermostat open
