free, or about £5.

Any local PC repair shop will have old ones lying around.

What is a tight budget? Do you want CRT or LCD? Dell monitors are just a monitor with the dell brand so will work with other systems. An outstanding 19" monitor (CRT) from samsung will set you back £160, pricey but very good. Cheaper option would be a Relisys TE770 (£68). Or LG Flatron F700P (£123). If you want a 17" TFT Samsung SyncMaster 713BM will set you back about £100, you can pick these up, dare I say it, from PC World.
