Legend has it that in the early history of the school one sports reporter described their defense as "a red line" that could not be crossed. Another described their defense as a "wave" that swept over the opponents. From there the red changed to Crimson and the line became Tide. A "red tide" is an aquatic condition where too much bacteria or fungi have invaded the water and removed the oxygen. The fish die from this lack of oxygen, so "Crimson Tide" also refers to a condition that kills its opponents.

in the early 1900s before there was television, radio and newspaper reporters used very vivid descriptions of football games to "paint a picture" for fans. The University of Alabama was beating some team very badly in the early 1900s in the middle of a massive storm and a reporter wrote that the University of Alabama (who were wearing crimson colored jerseys) looked like a crimson tide rolling down the field

nothing to do with "red tide". The old name of the team was "The red and whites" predominently red. They were good and rolled over opponents. This was noted by someone as a "tide". It stuck. I was curious and looked it up a few months ago. Now, about those "Orangemen".
