I have a Linksys Router with 4 inputs. All I have to do is connect the Ethernet cables from my computers into those 4 ports, and the cable from the modem into the modem port on it. I don't even use their software and it works fine for me.

first this depends on your Internet service provider and how they authenticate on the network for example with ATTyahoo if you are using a sieman speed stream modem, then the modem first be placed into bridge mode simply by accessing 192.168.0.1 clicking on advanced then PPP location selecting bridge mode then saving the settings...once the modem in in bridge mode then you can connect the router, to configure the router in this case you would surf the the routers user interface which the address for that is going to be dependent on the router manufacture for example linksys uses 192.168.1.1 and D-link uses 192.168.0.1 you can usually get this information from either the user manual or the manufactures web sight. once you are in the user interface then you have to set the router for connect using PPPoE to get to this setting again is going to be different for every router. once the router is configured then you can usually connect and browse if not then its time to contact your Internet service provider because you may not be pulling correct IP information or you may have to force DNS more advanced settings which you have to get from them. here again though this is just for one Internet service and one type of modem for example with my cable connection all I did was connect the router because it was set to obtain IP address automatically from the modem. bottom line there is too many possibilities to this question.

You didn't state what type of router. However, you would take the connection from your computer and hook it into your router. Than connect your computer into the router via another ethernet cable. You would of course, have to set up the router.

If in doubt, consult the manual that came with it.
