It doesn't matter if some feel he was a good president or a bad one. He was still the president and should be treated with the respect he deserves. The fact that so few found their way to the services shows the selfishness of those who didn't show. I guarantee they didn't show not because there wasn't room but because they were with their families for the holidays and didn't feel obliged to go. They probably figured others would go so they didn't have to. Even if there wasn't room for all of them, they should have been first in line for the public viewing. Whatever happened to lead by example. These are people we voted for and they can't even take a few days out of their not-so-busy schedule to pay their respects to a former President. It's not like Congress is convening right now and work conflicted. They are off until mid-January anyways. It is pretty sad.

Actually there are 435 members of congress all together, It's not a question of unity, but whether of timing. Granted, there isn't perfect timing when talking about the death of a former President, or death in general.

But at the time of Pres Ford's passing, many members of Congress were on vacation and moreover, Congress is not in full session right now. When the President delivers the State of the Union in a couple of weeks, that is the official opening of Congress. If Pres Ford'd passed during the Congressional session, there would've been a much larger contingent of Representatives to represent the House of Reps, since Pres Ford served in the House for a quarter century. The State of the Union and the state of the State address given by each governor is given in January around the same time.
In fact the easiest way to remember when the State of the Union is given is to count two months from the state opening of the British Parliament. The Queen opens Parliament in Mid Nov.

You're right, it's too bad more are not turning out to visit our former President.

I do know his approval rating dropped significantly after he fully pardoned Richard Nixon. That may affect the turnout... Plus he had part of one term and then was beat by Jimmy Carter in the next Presidential Election.

I think this shows something lacking in our society, and both Republicans and Democrats are equally guilty. I am ashamed of them all
