I do not recommend a full drive state restore; a system restore sometimes will work. However you seem to have one of several common problems.

1.) Not enough ram, check for a commit charge that is less than the total available memory. If commit is higher your system is in what is called "Thrashing" mode. The system is VERY busy moving memory around, too busy. Add system memory.

2.) be sure that task manager is running BEFORE you start all other programs, if the system locks up, check to see if the performance shows very high CPU utilization 90+. If so then open the process tab and look for an application that is using the most memory and or processor time. If you find one, the try lowering the priority of it (RIGHT CLICK) to less than what it was, often "normal to low"

3.) In IE, turn off all toolbars like yahoo, msn, and so on. Too many tool bars are process hogs. Besides you can create a CHAIN of toolbars. That is to say one or two have popup blockers, or phishing filters and so on. Then you get a tool bar intercepting a toolbar intercepting a toolbar. This is a case of "who's in control"

4.) Remove all icons in the "system tray", some of these can load up on memory. Or sometimes a package you ran in the past has left something installed that is looking for some hardware, or checking for an internet site. In this case the system may get hooked on "looking for something" that is not present, this is called I/O bound.

5.) Try starting in admin mode; (F8 during boot) see if it locks up then, admin mode uses a primitive set to start up. If this works fine, you most likely have a miss-installed application startup set. You can force the system to show you each step at boot time. This will help find the offender. When found, remove or reinstall it

If none of this helps, then before you do a full system restore from DVDs (or CD-ROMs) backup all user file sets. this is normally the "Documents and Settings" folder set then have the system force user data to be on drive D, that way if you restore again the data is not affected

I hope this helps

I've just realised that this is your 4th question on the same theme, so here is my answer (also in response to one of your other questions elsewhere)

Your PC "... kinda locks up.." in what way? What are you doing when this happens?

Locking up is probably caused a rogue program or a resource problem.

You should have told us what your PC specs are. What operating system, your RAM (memory) size, the processor (if you know), or even how old your PC is.

If it locks up, open up Task Manager (Control+Shift+Esc) and look to see if any of the applications are "Not Responding" - you can then 'End Task' and (if necessary) uninstall the offending application.

If that doesn't solve the locking, then (still in Task Manager) look in the Processes section and click on the CPU column - This will sort your current processes in order of CPU usage. Anything close to 100% (other than 'System Idle Process') is hogging your resources and you will either need to uninstall the program (if possible) or install more RAM into your system.

There's no point in restoring your system every 6 months. You'd only be hiding the cracks and not addressing the real issue, which to me sounds like a resource problem.

My opinion is if your computer is locking up on you, most likely, you have some kind of spyware or virus that is not being detected. If you can get online, try a free virus online scan at Bit Defender. Another program that you can download onto your computer is AVG anti-spyware. It is excellent at finding spyware that might be causing you your problems. It fully active for 30 days. If you don't purchase the software after 30 days you lose the full benefits but you can open it at any time and update it and run a full scan. If neither one of these programs finds your problem then email me back and we can try a registry cleaner to see if there are problems in the registry that might be causing your computer to lock up.

It is always better to depend on system restore so that un- identified errors are undone with out affecting the basic operating system. I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

You did not mention how much memory the computer has. Not have sufficient RAM memory is one of the most common causes of hang ups. Repost with the amount of memory, please...
