aeris was a useless character that didn't contribute to gameplay - so i'll choose ashe
while on this subject, aeris DID have to die in final fantasy VII - it was mandated by the storyline. also, a phoenix down has never brought any final fantasy character back to life after they died. a phoenix down revived a character that was knocked out. much like a smelling salt would do, in our world
there are many other, *better* characters that died in final fantasy games prior to final fantasy VII. a great example is general leo from FFVI - and he wasn't even a playable character. or how about those six year old twins that pretty much thought they were commiting suicide to save cecil's gang in FFIV?

Well I would have to go with Ashe becasue she doesn't die halfway thru the game like Aeris did.
Since I am on this topic, Aeris didn't have to die. It's Final Fantasy. Use a Pheonix Down. She'll come back alive.
