I, too, found it hard to believe that a woman could not know she was pregnant. However, when I was 38 and my children were 17, 15, and 12 I began having some stomach pains whenever I ate, developed heartburn, which I never had before, and had little appetite. By the time my yearly physical time came I knew that what I was dealing with was probably serious. My doctor originally diagnosed me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome until she did my pelvic exam. We were all thoroughly surprised when my cervix felt like I was pregnant. Even a positive urine test was not enough to convince my doctor that I could possibly be pregnant. I had been on birth control pills for 11 years and had been having normal periods. My doctor listened for a heartbeat and there is was clear as a bell. She sent me the next day for an ultrasound since we had no idea how far along I was. I still find it hard to believe I was 17 weeks along when I found out. I had developed Gestational Diabetes which was causing some of my problems. So, since it has happened to me, I never dis-believe anymore when someone says they were pregnant and didn't know it. I also have a cousin who went to the hospital with severe stomach pain and came home with a baby boy!! My niece just had a baby girl in November and only found out she was pregnant in Oct. I think it is more common in women who carry extra weight and/or have irregular periods. That is the case with me, my cousin, and my niece. We were heavy set when our surprise babies were born. I had regular periods because of the hormones in the Pill and both my niece and cousin have very irregular periods.

You can still have what appear to be periods well into your pregnancy. I have heard of several cases where this happened.

As others have said, it is also possible that the tests don't register. rare, but possible.

You see stories like this on TV every so often. Usually, one look at the mother and you think, yeah, she probably wouldn't have noticed (rather fat). However, I also know a girl at work who was 8 months along and still was at the stage where people were wondering "Is she really pregnant, or just getting fat?" And she wasn't much more than a 10 or 12. The baby is several months old now and just fine.

So, it can happen.

Hi there,
I have read accounts in the newspaper of women who supposedly had a baby without ever knowing that they were pregnant. I can not personally understand how this could happen. It is one of those times where truth is stranger than fiction.
In the cases that I have checked into the woman was enormously obese and did not even notice a 9 month pregnancy. I have no explanation for why she would not feel the baby move.
These kinds of things are the sort of "Medical Miracles" that you read about. You are unique in that you actually know someone that this happened to! Boy, I would have some questions for her!
Take care.
Blessings

I've often wondered the same thing, you see those women on tv who were like "I swear, I had no idea I was pregnant, and the baby just fell out when I went to the bathroom!" Whatever. I feel the baby kick so hard, it would be hard to ignore it. But I guess if a woman is very very large, you wouldn't be able to feel much outside all those layers, and also they might think they are having indigestion and tummy irritation when they go into labor. I think that kind of case is very very rare though.

I had a friend whose periods where always irregular so it wasn't nothing to not have a period for a couple of months. She was having stomache pains and they did an ultrasound to check out her stomache and found out she was 5 months pregnant. It was her first and she was on the chubby side so you really couldn't tell. Goes to show anything like that can happen.

That really does happen. Our neighbor went to the Hospital for stomach pains and came home with a baby.

That is a very odd case. She had her period totally throughout? That is definetly NOT normal. To find out for sure you would have to go to the doctor.
