I would say West Indies, they had the fast bowlers which were threatening, they had the batsmen which were damaging and they were great fieldsmen. West Indies of that era will always rate as the best team, with the likes of Richards, Haynes,Marshall, Gomes and etc...
Compare that to Australia today, well Australia works well and gel together nicely, thats why they are strong unit. As far as players go, I think the world fears Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist the most.Australia's team is a team of great players that conquered the world at a period where world cricket has fallen behind, or is it because Australia are too strong.

Win had some great players in 1984, including the best bowling attack in the world with Marshall, Garner, Holding and the young Courtney Walsh. They also held a marvellous batting order of Haynes and Greenidge, the legendary Viv Richards, Larry Gomes, and an ageing Lloyd, with Jeffrey Dujon behind the stumps, but I think they would have a big task just to get Ricky Ponting out in the form he has found recently, then contain Adam Gilchrist for long enough to dismiss the tail. They would then have to contend with the wily genious of Shane Warne, the stoic continuity of Glenn McGrath, and the ferocious pace of Brett Lee.
In the end, I think 2006's Australia just edges past the Windies, but in terms of legend, the 1984 team will always be remembered as one of, if not the best ever side to play together.

I disagree with the above comment as Matthew Hayden who has two of the highest test scores ever, is clearly an exceptional batsmen, Mike Hussey who has averaged over 100 in the ashes and Adam Gilchrist who scored the second fastest 100 ever (granted behind Viv Richards but look at the bowling Viv faced to get that score) are both clearly exceptional batsmen.
Adam Gilchrist has scored runs at such an alarming rate that now they talk about test cricket in the Pre and Post Gilchrist era due to the ferocity he has pushed the run rate requirement up in the modern test game.
Follow this with the greatest spinner and the greatest Pace (Medium-Fast) Bowler ever in Warne and McGrath (their figures speak for themselves they do not need romancing) then I think the Australians would win, but to be fair you could pick Any Australian team from the past 18 years and they would give the West Indies of '84 a good game.
Look at Steve Waugh's teams and Allan Border's sides both brilliant.
Overall look at the longevity of Australian dominance, no other nation can touch them.
I would love to see a match between the two teams but alas that is something for fantasy.
If you look at it statistically speaking Australia would win - best bowlers and overall best batsmen.

West Indies easily.
Statistictly, the best ever opening partnership, was Haynes and Greenidge
They had the best 4 fast bowlers ever, (in one team).
Viv Richards was one of the greatest batsmen of all time.
Clive Lloyd was a great batsman and the most successful captain of the modern era.
Only Warne and Gilchrist would get into the WI team unless, you think differently?

It would prove very difficult to beat WI, as if they got in trouble they would slow the over rate down! Australia are the more balanced side, as WI haven't had a halfway decent spinner since Lance Gibbs retired 30 years ago ... it depends on the ground, on a flat track or something with uneven bounce I'd say WI as their quicks would use it better, but anywhere with a bit of lateral movement, either seam or swing, I'd go for Aus. BTW I think the Aussies were better in 2003 when they were putting that 16-match winning record together, and for my 2 cents the late Malcolm Marshall was the greatest fast bowler ever ... pace, swing, seam and a horrible skiddy bouncer (just ask Mike Gatting!)

WI - 84
In them they had Holding, Marshall, Garner, Walsh, sheer pace and skills.
The Aussies have Mcgrath who wouldn't even get into the WI "B" team of those days.
Batsmen , Greenidge & Haynes , Viv Richards , Lloyd, Dujon.
The best the Aussie's can throw at them are brett lee, the likes were had for breakfast by the WI batsmen.
Remember Aussie's had Lillee & Thompson and were still beaten 5-1
I dont think Mcgrath is in the Lillee league or Brett in the Thompson pace.
The Aussie's will get a hiding,
The only class batsman they have is Ricky Ponting.
Not enough.............
