The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team says that IE has significant vulnerabilities and that people should not use it:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"
http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878
Internet Explorer relies on ActiveX for some features to work, despite the new IE7 not having ActiveX turned on by default, its still there and could be a security risk. Without ActiveX some features may not work properly in IE
Here is what Microsoft had to say about this feature:
"An ActiveX control can be an extremely insecure way to provide a feature...From the moment a user downloads an ActiveX control, the control may be vulnerable to attack..."
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/components/activex/security.asp
(Firefox doesn't have ActiveX at all)
Using IE means there is more of a chance of screwing up your PC and have your ID stolen.
Here is IE & FF side by side
http://www.webdevout.net/security_summary.php#vulnerabilities
IE supports webstandards very poorly, try this test with IE and Firefox
http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html
IE will fail HORRIBLY while FF will do much better
If you are worried about "Big Brother" knowing your surfing habits then you will be happier with Firefox's default settings. Both browsers have phishing protection, but Firefox's default settings are better for privacy minded people.
Concerning the default phishing settings in FF:
"With this option selected ('Check using a downloaded list...'), Firefox will check the current site against a frequently updated list stored on your computer. No data about the sites you visit is transferred to third-party anti-phishing providers..."
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options
With IE7, if you want phishing protection, you have no choice - your farm sex porn surfing habits will be sent to IE whether you like it or not.
"When you use Phishing Filter to check websites automatically or manually, the address of the website you are visiting will be sent to Microsoft, together with some standard information from your computer such as IP address, browser type..."
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/privacy/ieprivacy_pr7.mspx
Here is a nice rundown by C/Net of both browsers side by side
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10442_7-6656808-1.html?tag=fea_txt
The rest of these reviewers agree with C/Net that Firefox is the better all around better browser

With IE, its just a simple fact that the chances of you getting infected with spyware and viruses are higher

I prefer Firefox. A main reason is that it has fewer vulnerability points than IE.
Hackers attack the most popular browser, IE. So I stay away from IE and I prefer Firefox. I also use AOL FreeRide for the same reason.

well for starters if you're going to use Microsoft Windows i would suggest you stick to their software as much as possible, it just keeps the system "as stable as MS can". BMW and Mercedes will never supply you with parts to the other's car. I like the new look of IE7 and it seems stable, apart from the memory it hogs and its got an interesting feature i wish to explore: phising!
I've been using a 3rd party software from http://www.flashpeak.com and it's beaten both of these browsers for me. its been ahead on popup blockers and it first had tabbed browsing.
