A mammalogist studies mammals, although that also includes cetaceans (like whales)

A person who studies mammals is a special type of vertebrate zoologist called mammalogist. Usually mammalogists specialize in certain groups of mammals, and they are called, for example, "primatologist" or "rodentologist" or generally " specialist".
If the person is studying communities of land mammals, it could also be an ecologist, in this case, a "land community ecologist".

I hope this helps, I'm a rodent mammalogist myself :-)
