Why is it when you're waiting to use the loo and someone comes out of the toilet you're waiting to use you feel compelled to smile at each other?!

Hahahaha.. Funny question...
Never notice that but it's true.. that's why I don't use public toilets ever... there's always awkardness~

It's because you feel uncomfortable knowing that someone knows you're gonna use the toilet they just used...

I smile too, its a sort of nervous reaction, as we are both doing something rather private, and sharing the experience in some small way. Do you know where the term "loo" comes from? I know its British, I'm just wondering if it is an abbreviation of some sort.

When you are walking down the street and you see someone, I always smile at them. It's just a greeting that I always use. Sometimes when I'm walking down the street oon Christmas or today (New Years Day), I say 'Merry Christmas' or Happy New Year'. I don't know why. I just do.

A smile is a form of greeting and most people do this anywhere they are.

because we all feel weird about going into the toilet after a stranger. so the person coming out is hoping they have not left an splatters on the seat and the person going in is thinking exactly the same thing

It is polite.

and being in a public toilet brings the stress levels up, and smiling is a fake way of getting out of a fake situation. lol

thats mine and sciences view.

I guess because if you meet someone in public, it's nice to smile at them. Even in a weird setting.

And I agree with chris s. Good point.
