did was take out the old burner and connect the new one the same way.the computer won't read the software cd why? and i'm not sure what to look for in my computer to see if new driver was detected, there is on dvd driver in there and it says it is working properly. do i need the software cd to make it work or qwill it just work?

there was never a jumper cable on the old cd burner,i can't find a jumper cable at all.

The new drive needs to have a jumper setting changed from master to slave and then all should be fine. Hope this helps and Happy New year

Two hard drives and CD drives often share the same ribbon cable (the wide cable you attached to the back of the drive). In order for the computer to separate the two devices, one of them has to be set as the "master" device and the other as the "slave". This is done by moving a small jumper on the drive, near where the cables attach.

If you look on the drive, you will usually find a chart showing you the jumper settings for master, slave, and cable select. You need to look at the original drive and see how it is set (master, slave, or cable select) and the set the new drive to be the same. As the setting for master and slave varies with each brand of drives, you can not just match the jumper on the new one to be the same as the old. You have to determine what the setting means set the new one to the same meaning (master or slave)

check if the power and data cables are properly connected.

as long as the dvd burner gets picked up in the bios and windows xp, it will work.
