My school is performing the musical "Aladdin", and I am auditiong for Jasmine. I am extremely nervous! I've had a number of lead roles in plays, and I have done many solos. There are ALOT of other very talented girls going out for Jasmine. What are some things I can do to prepare? How can I calm my nerves, and become more comfortable singing in front of others (around 200 are expected to audition, I have to perform in front of all of them and the director).

1. Know something, if you can, about the role or roles for which you are auditioning, and pick appropriate material to show. For instance, if you're auditioning for CAROUSEL, don't sing a rock song from RENT, and vice-versa. The same holds true for what you wear to the audition -- you don't want to come in a costume, obviously, but you want the auditioners to be able to envision you in the show. Thus, you wouldn't wear a punk "streety" outfit to an audition for THE SOUND OF MUSIC, nor look like a cheerleader if you go in for HAIRSPRAY. I know these things seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people don't consider them.

2. Beyond the above, don't try to second guess the auditioners. Just go in and do your piece to the best of your ability. Be focused and as in-the-moment as you can.

3. Be REALLY well-prepared with your material, if possible. Remember, you're likely to have an accompanist who can't play it perfectly, and you will be nervous, which will be distracting. So be ready to the extent you can.

4. Don't try to sing beyond your range or riffing ability. You would be surprised how many good singers decrease the effectiveness of their auditions by adding a higher note than they can hit comfortably or a riff that they are not good at, when they don't need to do either. Know what you're good at, and stay within it.

5. Never apologize for anything. As I said before, try to seem (and feel) as relaxed, confident, and focused as you can. Just be true to yourself, and you will impress people, at least in my experience.

Well prepare a song that you are great at. Practice a part from the script that you think is the best. Practice alot. Remember you are great and you will get a part and should be glad with that. When you are up on stage auditioning find a spot on the wall up high and stare at it and say your lines. But still have emotion so you can get in. See when you look at the audiance you freeze and that won't get you a good part so remember all I said. Good luck hope you get Jasmine. By the way act like you are Jasmine. I mean you need alot of emotion. Sing a song that would show Jasmine and her emotions. That is how you might be able to get the part.

Practice in front of friends and family... it will be hard but it will be like rehearsing for a regular preformance. When the actual audition arrives it won't be as intimidating.

ACT, like you ARE Jasmine... no one will believe it unless you do

or simply ACT like you are a wonderful Broadway actress and this is just another audition. I'm not saying be cocky... but project confidence. I've spoken with a few different high school musical directors and each one says that confidence is equally important to them as talent!

Good Luck Jasmine!!

Practice the song and just relax and don't worry. I was the first to audition for my school play, and I just took a deep breath and did it. Stressing about it will just make you less confident, and you won't perform as well.

well if you already have the part you want picked out, practise until you die of boredom then choose a back up part just in case and practise that too.;
