with my old computer I bought a CRT monitor during this past summer its in great working condition and nothing is wrong with it but for my new computer I want to get a flat panel monitor. Would I be an idiot to get a new monitor or should I just keep the CRT monitor that I already have?

Hey there,

LCD monitors are cool. They take up less space, are a little more environmentally responsible, and do not take much electricity to run.

Now your question is a bit confusing. Flat Panel and LCD are two different things. Getting a flat panel really does not offer much. A flat panel IS a CRT (Cathode Ray Tub). It still has a lead base and weighs a TON! Don't bother with a Flat Panel; go for the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

However, you are asking a question that EVERYBODY asks. If it is working, why upgrade?

I have a 10 year old 21" monitor that I payed $1000 for back in 1997. It does me well, but it has it's issues.

No, you are not an idiot. Good question.

PS. Whoever gave me the "Thumbs Down" can KMA. This is a great answer. So many people confuse "Flat Panel" and "LCD" Flat Panel CRT's are just flat on the front, with no curve. They think they are getting an LCD and when they open the box, they are surprised to find a "Flat Panel"

Good question either way.

LCD Monitors are much smaller than CRTs, thus they are easier to fit on a desk.

They also tend to be easier to read, in my opinion, but they do cost a bit more.

If you have the money, I would go ahead and splurge for the LCD, keeping the CRT as a backup, just in case.

And Dell is a fine choice for a casual user.

Dell often has specials where the monitor is free.

Youre not a idiot for upgrading from CTR to LCD, but getting a Dell.....
Anyway, go for the LCD.
