I thought they were only intended to warn of Tornadoes yet, I hear them all of the time (Including the weekly tests on Tuesday mornings). Isn't the overuse dangerous in case of a real emergency?

If the Outdoor Warning Sirens are going off more than usual, there could be a malfunction. To learn more about what your local area uses them for or to report a malfunction contact your Office of Emergency Management.

Outdoor Warning Sirens are just that...to warn individuals outside to seek shelter inside and to tune to a local radio/television station for more information.

Outdoor Warning Sirens have different uses in different locations. Some areas use them only for "Tornado Warnings" and others use them for hazardous materials release, fire department notification, flood and so on.

Surely you can find out by finding the right person in government to ask. Try the business number of the fire department. Not 911. There should be a seven digit number in the phone book. They will know why, or can refer you to someone who knows.

Accidental siren operation is frequent only in poorly designed or maintained systems. Well designed systems are activated by coded signals. I was closely involved in our own community warning system, and would like to know what you find. You could contact me at edvining@sbcglobal.net.
