The International Dateline runs down the middle of the Pacific Ocean. So the New Year on the Gregorian calendar would begin there and move west around the globe until it reaches the line again. If you go way north, you will find the eastern most part of Russia and the western most part of Alaska that are only a few miles apart. The Date Line runs between them. So The east most tip of Russia is first in the New Year, and the west most tip of Alaska (USA) is last. The two are only yards apart, but separated by a day.

Actually, I believe the Hawaii is the last place to celebrate the new year before you cross the International Date line, but I would have to actually check a map. The Far East would celebrate first, that I know.
