Mammals convert amino nitrogen to urea in the ornithine cycle. Ornithine reacts with ammonia and carbon dioxide to form citrulline, which reacts with more ammonia to make arginine, which gets hydrolyzed to urea and ornithine again. Also called urea cycle.
