Suggestions would be:
for Comedy: Night at the Museum
for Drama: The pursuit of Happiness
I would probably go to see Night at the Museum before the pursuit of happiness just because I prefer comedies. If you want to incorperate movies that arent quite the newest in, Probably the best recent movie I've see is Stranger than Fiction, so if you havent seen it yet and have a nearby theater still playing it, go see that.

Depends what you're in the mood for...and what country
Laughs - Borat.
Old Fashioned Romance - Miss Potter
Action - Casino Royale
Drama - Apocalypto
Other great films coming out, or out, are The Last King of Scotland and Blood Diamond.
Out of all of them - Apocalypto....Amazing film....

Hey, you can watch the movies whatever your mood is for. I saw "We are the Marshall" and it was pretty phenomenal about rebuilding their team in their campus after they lost staff and team by plane crash. Here is the yahoo movies and browse about their critics, showtimes, and more...below the the site.
Enjoy and Happy New Year!
