A psychologist is a therapist, BUT a therapist is not always a psychologist.
A psychologist *always* has a *doctoral* degree in psychology. Most psychologists are licensed to provide therapy (but some work as researchers or have other jobs). They are referred to as Dr. ___.
A therapist does not necessarily have to have a degree in psychology. A person can work as a therapist if he or she has a masters degree in social work or a masters degree in psychology (though not all states allow a person with a masters in psychology to be licensed as a therapist, so if you see someone with a masters degree it's important to find out if they are actually able to practice). They are referred to as Ms./Mr. ___.
A counselor can be a person with just a bachelor's degree in psychology or another field. Many inpatient psychiatric hospitals have counselors who work with patients on a daily basis. These people are often not licensed and almost always work in a supervised capacity.
A psychiatrist has a medical degree. A psychiatrist can be trained to provide therapy.

A therapist treats you after a psychologist has dug deep into your psyche. Or, in other words $175/hr. difference.
