this might sound different coming from a guy because hardly any guy will ever say something like this. but, whether he can admit when he's wrong or not, whether or not he'll stand by his woman till the end, and whether or not he treats a woman the way a woman deserves to be treated, not like she's just an object

A real man is composed of religious belief, fiscal responsibility, career and education. A man that does not work can never call hisself a man. A real man wants a real women to live side by side with and not a mommy figure or someone to oppress. There are very few good men out there.....There is me and probably about 100 or so left. Good place to find a good man would be at church or school.

A man is kind, your rock in a hard place. A man is forgiving, loving, faithful, (semper fidelis), and will always be on your side.
Altruism must be learned, so be patient if your boyfriends don't yet measure up to this example. You be the one to help them, and don't be dismayed when they think they have made it already. Don't humiliate them at your age.

But in the sense I think you mean, I think that what makes a man a man is the ability to take responsibility: to step up when it's right to do so; to bask in the glory when you accomplish something; and to take the heat, apologise, and learn from it when you screw up.
