24 hours? You're being over-sensitive. Chill! Either they haven't seen it yet, or they have seen it but haven't got around to replying (there's no etiquette that I know of which says you must respond to an e-mail the instant you read it - I would say within a week would be perfectly acceptable), or they don't think you expect a reply at all.
I suggest the last option because it sounds like you sent a generic greeting to everyone in your address book. Perhaps many of the the recipients, noting that you'd chosen to send them an impersonal mass mail, did not feel inclined to - and did not think they were expected to - send you an individual response.
If you give in the expectation of receiving, you should bear in mind that you're likely to get what you give. If you dash off a two-liner to "Address Book: All Contacts" you can't complain if it's treated like junk mail by the recipients.
If I want to be overwhelmed with specially-written e-mails from 20 of my friends, then I make sure I send 20 specially-written e-mails so that each person knows I've thought of them. Even if this means using copy'n'paste for the body of the mail and top-and-tailing it with something personalised. It hardly takes any time and I'm always glad I bothered.

Marion, don't be so sensitive hon. People hopefully had better things to do than sitting at their computer on New year's Eve of New Year's Day.
Not that you didn't. But do you get the point.
I mean, of course you're hoping for a reply and the same in return, but it's not the reason people send wishes in the first place. It's because you mean it, and because you care about the people you send it to.
So, what if they send you an answer later?
Now if they never do, by phone, letter, text message, email, I'd understand you'd be hurt.
But try not to expect things in return from people, and you'll enjoy doing something better for someone else, specially if you care about that person.
Happy New Year.x

Why do you need someone to return a simple email like that? Just because you reply to HNY wishes, doesn't mean they need to. Maybe they're all still asleep because they got wasted, or maybe they saw the message, smiled, and went about their day's activities. It's not that big a deal!

Last night, your friends were probably busy celebrating. This morning, they're probably still sleeping in. You ought not give to receive, but I can understand your frustration; you want mutuality from your friends. Give them a couple days to respond. If they don't, don't worry too much unless they have a habit of not responding. Then you might have to evaluate whether they are as interested in the relationship as you are. Anyway, Happy New Year! :]

Does it matter that they did not respond? At the end of the day all that matters is that you wished them happy new year! Also it could be that people have not been on line today or last night and will respond when they do!

You are giving to much thought to the matter. Which tells me you probably give thought to lots of things like this that you shouldn't. Think about it this way 'You have friends that you can email!' Whether or not they email you back. This is a new year utilize this new beginning to start thinking more positively.
