Back in the day when I cooked, I used the dishwasher all the time. I had a top of the line one that had a garbage disposal built in (not to be used for big things like bones) but it worked well on everything else. It had a pre-rinse cycle that took all the gunk off. Then it went into the cleaning mode. It was great. But I sure hated unloading that thing.
I think they ought to make dishwasher that are built in to your upper cabinets. You put the dishes away dirty, then turn it on. When it is done your dishes are already put away--LOL
But to answer your question, it depends....does it clean the dishes well without rinsing? If so , why rinse?

You don't have to rinse the dishes, but as a landlord, I can tell you that several of the worst and most common problems with dishwashers come from not rinsing in the sink first. The plumbing can clog in the dishwasher drain which requires pulling the thing out from it's space and is a hassle. The other problem was that food can get stuck and rot in there somewhere and make a terrible smell. I have seen these problems at rentals, and my best advice is prevent them so you don't ever have to deal with them!
An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Happy 2007!

I have done it both ways and I have found that if I don't rinse at least the big stuff that cant be dissolved with just hot water I rinse the dish off. If I don't, I find that when I empty it I am using a scour pad to get it off and putting it back through. I have also found the food that I did not rinse off splattered and dried onto the other dishes. I think it is a waste of water to put it through a second time when I could have rinsed it off and used a lot less. Happy washing!

I rinse them if I won't be starting the dishwasher right away. If I don't there will be a smell from the soiling food that is stuck on the plates and that is nasty!.
If I am going to start the dishwasher right after a meal, I do not rinse them.
Don't argue! Just be glad you have a dishwasher! So many people in the world don't even have DISHES! Peace!

Just get the big stuff off, but as far as rinsing, it's a waste of water, that's what the dishwashers job is, to rinse and clean.

Rinsing dishes before you put them in the dishwasher helps get the particles of food off that will stay on the dishes in the lower quality dishwashers.
The better quality dishwashers will take off all the food particles and the dishes don't have to be rinsed.
I don't think either you or your husband are right or wrong. It's all about preference.
I have a very good dishwasher but I still hand wash my dishes with dishwashing liquid soap before I put them in the dishwasher. I put the dishes in the dishwasher with dishwashing detergent to sanitize them.

I do rinse (and sometimes wash dishes) before putting them in the dishwasher. Sometimes the washer doesn't get run for a few days so I don't want to attract "critters."

I rinse I don't want to take the chance of clogging my screen in the bottom of the dish washer. I also rinse as most of the time I am alone and only run it once a week.
One more thing if he is willing to do the dishes let him do it what ever way he wants. Do you know how many women would love to have a man that is willing to take care of a dish.

I don't wash my dishes either, but what i have noticed is the hoses cab clog up with partials left on the dishes. I do a cleaning of my dishwasher every now and again when I noticed theres blockage. What works well is, lemon juice or a lemon cool aide pack. Put the juice or cool aid pack in the dispense container. Run the washer and the lemon cleanses the hoses.

We do not rinse ours, I use the orange Dawn Gek Packs detergent and rarely have a problem with anything coming out not clean. If it's like a spoon or something that has badly dried food on it (I have 5 teenagers and they tend to leave things too long someteims) then I stick them in a bowl or whatever is in the sink with hot water until the next load goes in and they come out clean.
