He wants to be in a play to get back to the real live acting. He is only gong on a sabbatical for a while. He's probably gone in the story to fix his hearing.

William Peterson (Gil) wanted time off to do a play in Rhode Island so they wrote a storyline where Gil is going on sabbatical...he's burnt out from the whole CSI deal so he will be teaching a seminar at some college and having some much needed time away from his CSI duties.

I remember reading somewhere that he didn't like the fact the the "original" CSI was exploited by having so many spin offs...CSI New York, Miami as well as other shows with similar themes. The show won't be the same w/o him.

no this cant be true, I have been missing so much with this show, I just caught A Bullet Runs Through It (Part 1& 2) last night from season 6.
