The Berenstain Bears book series was my favorite because it taught me so much about being human and operating as a human being.

Am I the only one who remembers "Harriet The Spy" by Louise Fitzhugh? It came out in the mid-'60's and was very radical for its time. Harriet was smart, a writer, odd, a little mean, but very real, honest, and human. I thought it was the best book of all time when I read it at about 10 years old -- finally, a real protagonist instead of an adult's idea of what a little girl should be. I still identify with Harriet!

By the way, the movie of "Harriet" was awful and nothing like the book.

I'd agree with everyone about the Narnia Chronicles, but they are still my favorite books, and not just for children. Incredibly wise and enchanting.

I wasn't a child when it came out, I was about 17. But it's now a classic and I still think it's a great book for a child.
The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia.
As Freddie experiences the changing seasons along with his companion leaves, he learns that death is part of life.
But when I was a child, I loved any book about Babar.
