Origin:Cattle
Named after Texas lawyer Samuel Maverick, who allowed his cattle to roam free on the range.
Sam had a rough new idea and made a nice profit at roundup time.Any unbranded cattle were claimed by him as his "brand" was no brand at all.
Now: loosely applied many non conventional rebel ideas or items,in some sort of hero worship for an American western lawyer's get rich quick scheme.

It sounds to me like it could be a wild horse or other some other wild creature. I just can't see the cowboy "Maverick" riding a cow.

Maverick, usually referring to semi-wild, unbranded cattle in the Western United States. The term is also applied (less commonly) to other unbranded range animals such as horses; so it could be used for either
