Hello everybody
I have a random question – is it possible to get DSL service without phone service? I know you have to have a phone line for DSL but do I have to have a calling plan and all that?
Thanks and happy New Year

Of course, you would have to pay the phone bill if you have a phone line. But you can get a minimal service to support the DSL service.

If you have cable TV, you might be happier to CUT the phone line all together and get High Speed internet through your phone company. Just PRICE both ways, and pick the best. (Your cable high speed might be faster).

Consult http://www.thelist.com for other high speed options in your area.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

What are you thinking? Vonage or Cell Phone?

DSL ought to have a phone line. It is the DSL modem which plays the role of making a normal landline to full duplex and increase in speed. As to have calling plans or not, it depends upon the ISP whether to provide with incomings only for free with basic rental or its compulsory to have a calling plan. However i do not know of any ISP which provides only the facility of providing incomings only with DSL connection.

I would need to get a basic land line to get DSL... that's our primary hesitation right now. We get everything via our cable company and have Vonage for phone. I think we're going to switch anyhow, we can transfer the phone number and the DSL is currently much less expensive.

I believe so. My uncle said he got Vonage phone service and a free router, so yeah. You can use any phone service for DSL. It goes through your phone line and allows you to talk at the same time your on the internet.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to have a phone plan.
Try to Google the company you want to use and search for requirements

It depends on your local carrier. Find out if they have a "Data Only" plan.

What you are looking for is "naked" or "dry-loop" DSL.
