There is a spot right beside my nipple that hurts like crazy can anyone tell me what it might be or why it is hurting so bad. I am 38 weeks pregnant and wondering if this will affect my ability to breastfeed.

Sounds like a plugged duct to me and if that's the case there's nothing to worry about. It shouldn't affect your ability to breastfeed. In fact, if you get one when you are breastfeeding, it's easily remedied by breastfeeding more often!

What you can do is apply very warm washcloths to the area and massage the breast...NOT THE NIPPLE! If you stimulate the nipple, it might cause you to go into labor. But you are 38 weeks so going into labor might not be a bad thing, huh? :)

Hot compresses should help, but bring it up to your doctor when you go next time. If it becomes worse or you start feeling like you're getting the flu (achy, running a fever, cold chills) you could have mastitis and then you'd need medications.

Good luck!

It is possible that you have a plugged milk duct. I would ask your OB/GYN or midwife at your next visit, or you can even call a lactation consultant, La Leche League leader, or pediatrician.
