My due date is 1/11/07. I am 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced as of 12/27. The head is at -1. My midwife told me it won't be long, but it has been 5 days and nothing! I am ready to have this baby. Do any of those old wive's tales work to bring on labor?

I am a nurse, who worked in labor and delivery for 3 years. Most of those wives tales don't work, but if you can stimulate the nipple, it produces a chemical called pitocin, which makes the uterus contract, they give pit, (in an IV to induce labor) after birth, breastfeeding helps control bleeding, due to the release of pitocin. I have heard many Doctors tell patients to go home and have sex.

I have heard that pushing in a very warm bath has brought on labor because it ruptures your membranes. I however went overdue and I tried every wive's tale. There really is no way of predicting when labour will begin.

It is best to not rush the baby or do anything that could potentially harm the child. You don't want to do any harm to the placenta as it will cut off oxygen to the baby and increase the possibility of having a stillborn.

Be patient and enjoy the end of your pregnancy. I assure you you will miss it when it is all over. Relax and enjoy time alone with your significant other.

You could ask your midwife for a membrane sweep. It sounds like it would be easy enough for her to do. A friend of mines water broke during one of her sweeps. I was told though however this is painful.. but not nearly as painful as labour!

Good luck.

I am in the same boat as you, my EDD is 1-13-07. Very Pregnant and very miserable, castor oil didnt work, it works for some just not all. Try walking, that is what i am getting ready to go do now. If you are having trouble getting comfortable at night, take some tylenol PM, it is tylenol with benedryl so it will help you sleep. works like a charm. Congrats and our little blessings will be here just in time to enjoy a full year.

Nipple stimulation is the number 1 way to self induce. Try walking also. When I get to walking so much I start crapping uppretty bad. Maybe it will work for you.

Spicy food will not put you into labor.

LOL... I remember feeling this with my first, and I'm sure that every pregnant woman who went over her due date did, too.

There's not too much you can do, as baby will come when baby's ready to come, but I've heard that sex sometimes helps, nipple stimulation, and walking. Sometimes, spicy foods have been said to help, too.

Try to relax as much as possible, though, because you won't be getting too much down time once the baby gets here.

All the wise tales are wise tales. That baby will come when it is ready. Sad but true. You can stay dialated for weeks. And have no labor. Then boom you have a baby just like that. Just try to relax and take some time for yourself. Relax in the tub (not too hot) in candle lite or try to relax on the couch with no tv or anything just you and that pregnant belly. That is what I think helped me with my second baby. Just relax and see what happens.

Good luck

my midwife suggested curb walking. She said you'll feel stupid doing it. You wouldn't believe how many weird looks I got, but it worked for me.

You walk down the street with one foot up on the curb, and the other down on the road. Back and forth and forth and back. It'll rock your pelvis and help things get underway. And it's safe to boot! Good luck and Happy New Year!

My second child was overdue and my OBGYN suggested not only nipple stimulation but he suggested sex. Semen is the natural version of pitocin.
