Start by getting an idea of an image you would want to paint (dont try anything too detailed or hard if you really believe you dont have drawing skills). Then do a sketch of your idea. Once you have the sketch down on a regular piece of paper, draw it again on a canvas. If you need to you can trace it on by going over the lines of the sketch really hard then take the sketch and put it on the canvas so the back of the paper is facing you and then with a pencil, color in the entire paper hard so that you can see the sketch show through the back of the paper. Once you have the sketch down, your fine because then you can play around with the paint. Use a paint that will be easy to work with, such as tempera, because it doesn't dry quickly.

What has your teacher been doing? That's why you're having 'classes' for her/him to tell you what to paint and how to start!! "Paint a picture" is a terrible assignment! She/he should give a specific task, such as 'paint a branch full of autumn leaves', or ' an item of kitchen crockery'. Anyway, if you want an idea - choose something you love. Maybe you love football - so paint a football and a pair of boots out on the front step for example. If you love music, paint your guitar with some music scores scattered around it. Use a view card ( a rectangle cut out of card to focus on what you want to frame) You don't even have to get all the items into the 'frame' you can focus and make your own composition. As a beginner, limit your colours to two or three shades of the same colour maybe, or even stark black and red on white perhaps (whatever you think is in keeping with the subject matter. Keep it simple. One tip I remember from art class was to look at the shape of spaces BETWEEN the objects too, not only the shape of the objects themselves - and it helped me enormously. Good luck.

Isra.....you can paint. All you have to do is be creative. Take your hand and dip it in the paint and mash it on the paper and see what happens. Take an Apple and dip it in paint and press it on paper and see what happens. Be creative with your art work...you could very well hit it big time..paintings like that have racked in literally thousands of dollrs and that is no liel.

Isn't learning "how to paint" one of the reasons you are going to an art class? I suggest that you let your instructer know you are a beginner, perhaps he or she will pont you to another class or simply help you get started with the basics. You do not indicate whether you are referring to Oils, acrylics or water colors. all involve very basic foundational knowledge that you need to learn. Best of luck, go ahead and smear something up, enjoy it and then improve. eventually you will be delighted with a creation.

Art is what you say it is. Paint what you think looks good. Be very creative. Just pick out good painting utensils at a good arts & crafts store. And paint what you feel.

for starters try a palete knife with 2-3 acrylics colours on large thick paper, and play with the material, making as many free movements with your hands, use the back side of the handle for fine lines, write short poems or song, if not tales in the wet paint.
play music that motivates you and let yourself go. do this every day for 2-4 hours for 2 weeks.
have fun

Just paint. Let yourself go into your creation. It takes time to learn anything so just start at the beginning and go with your feelings as you are applying the brush to canvass.
Throw caution to the wind and just love what you are doing, which is creating.
