We have a 7 year old, above the range GE microwave oven. By the sounds it is making, we suspect the Magnetron is going out again. It did the same thing when it was about 2 years old. Should we repair it again or toss it?

This is an over the range oven which is generally much more expensive than the counter top variety - otherwise I would have tossed it long ago.

Over head microwaves are much more expensive then the conventional counter top models. But, two magnetron's equals a new unit when you factor in a service call. If you can change it out yourself, you can save money. Just beware, the capacitors in it can kill you. If you don't understand what I mean by that , call a professional. Sounds like a design flaw.

You said your oven is fairly new and sometimes there is a guarantee on that oven for 6 months to 1 year. If you still have the guarantee, you might be able to have it replaced for free. You may also need the receipt if you still have it. If you do not have either of the above, I would just get a new one. Do not get the brand name that you have now. Get a good brand name and make sure you have a 1 year guarantee and please keep the receipt just in case it gives you problems. You should not be having this problem as the product is fairly new. Prices have come down on microwaves and I am sure you can find a good one at a reasonable price. Look at Wal-Mart, Target and K-mart. Good Luck!!!

Our over the range Litton microwave oven is still going strong after 27 years of service. The only thing that went wrong with it was a fuse that finally blew out and I replaced 2 years ago. However, if your magnetron is truly the problem, that may indicate a design problem peculiar to your microwave. I guess if your not going to tinker with it yourself to save the service call, I'd bite the bullet and get a new one if you think the magnetron went out again.

Hi Beysy, Toss it. It will be more expense to repair it, than buying a new 1.

You can pick up another microwave for what... less than $50 now a days... and it will probably get a more useful life out of it then 2 years when you would have to replace parts on your current one again.

To be completely honest, it's so much more cost effective to just toss it and get a new one. Microwaves are almost a disposable electronic anymore and for the price it's going to cost to take it in, and then the inconvenience of not having one for up to a week, I think you would be better of getting a new guy!

For what it costs to repair it, you can buy a very top shelf new one for less that $150.

No they are way to cheap now a days. I can remember when they went for over 300 dollars. I had one of those and fixed it twice.
