It dates back to Victorian times when women had maids to help them into and out of dresses etc. Dressmakers at the time used to sew the buttons on other side of garments so that the maids could do them up easier (check out the scene in Titanic and you'll get an idea of what I'm on about). I guess the tradition's stuck! lol

Once upon a time well-to-do women had maids who helped them get dressed. Since most people are right handed and used to dressing themselves, they moved the buttons to the left side so the maids would not have a problem assisting their ladies.
Now days it makes it simpler for guys to undo the buttons, snaps, and zips, although we try not to make it too easy by using smaller and more fasteners.

Most people are right-handed, so it is easier for them to fasten buttons sewn on the left. But men have to keep their right arms free in case they have to draw their swords, hence the gender convention.

and why do they put zippers opposite mens??
probably to tell the diff between the clothes.
sometimes mens clothes look like women's.
