I think its nicer to live out of the centre, houses are cheaper, there is more greenery etc, but its not that far into central london, and you get all of the convenience.
I live in SW London, there are loads of nice places around

Unless you have buckets of money it's more a matter of where you can afford to live...Most of London is pretty accessible by public transport. I'd recommend finding a decent and safe neighborhood that has good links to the tube. Try Chiswick, Ealing, Hammersmith or Acton Town in west London. Also Wandsworth and Battersea have some nice areas. East London tends to be cheaper but you need to find out which neighborhoods are decent. When you are looking watch out for places where you see women and children out alone. That tends to be a sign of a safer neighborhood.

The best place to live in London is wherever you can afford. Once you get here and see how little you'll get for your money, you probably won't really care where you live as long as it's close to the things you like to do. But you can get to central London pretty easily from most parts of London.

I'm not going to tell, just in case you all want to come and live here, but:
It's 15 minutes (if that) from Baker Street by tube, and has fantastic bus/tube/railway links to almost all parts of London
In the north West of London, with easy access to the MI/getting out of town
It has nearly 800 acres of heath and woodland
Some fabulous old pubs
Some great music venues and markets
And is altogether the best part of London to live in.

Hampstead is a very nice area, gorgeous houses and some great restaurants, bars. It is very upper class and expensive to live there, but the gorgeous heath and walks in the park are some of the best in London.
There is Chelsea where again is very smart and is such a nice place to live in, full of massive houses and sophisticated.
I also love Knightsbridge, close to all the shops and has a great atmosphere.

North - Highgate, Muswell Hill, Maida Vale, St John's Wood
South - Dulwich, Putney
West - Chiswick, Fulham, Hammersmith

Camden Town, Swiss Cottage, Hapstead, all that area is nice and lively
Also Chiswick, Hammersmith, Putney on the other side of London
The rest isn't worth a look unless you can afford somewhere like Notting hill or Soho or Covent Garden

too busy
outskirts are better
still close too London if you want to do some good shopping or enjoy the nightlife

When ever moving over seas generally the center of where ever you are is a great place to live.
