Most people are scared off by foreign films, especially with subtitles

As has already been said... the subtitles is a big thing. Mainstream people in the US that haven't watched any subtitled media (films, anime, etc) don't have the reading speed to read the subs and still keep up with what is going on on-screen.

I will actually avoid foreign movies in the theater if they are dubbed. I was so glad they weren't dubbing Crouching Hidden, but in contrast the movie theater I went to for it on opening night had told all their ticket cashiers before they sold the tickets to tell the customers that the movie was indeed subtitled and not dubbed in English dialogue. Too many people won't see the movie if they have to deal with subtitles.

The law of supply and demand; there is not much demand in the US for foreign films, I love them but I'm in the minority.

Because that is not where the money is. Most people don't want to read subtitles while they;re at the movies.

Because the general populace is comprised of bubbleheads that cannot or will not broaden their horizons. The theater would be empty. W00t to Netflix!
