Because it's easier to believe what the mainstream propagandists pump into our homes everyday, than do some investigative research on our own.
It would shake the very foundations of our belief systems and allegiences to even consider that the government we pay taxes to, vote on, teach our children about and even argue over could be so evil.
It would shake the very foundations of our political system if people would wake up and examine OUR government in the light of truth.
But, people tend to forget and even glorify the past.
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (George Bernard Shaw)
Few people remember such events as;
The Lattimer Mine massacre, the Homestead Strike massacre, the Thibodaux massacre of 1887, the Ludlow massacre, the Bonus Army March in Washington, etc.
The experiments OUR government performed on our own servicemen and civilians including; STDs, LSD, anthrax, agent orange, etc. Think this only occurred many years ago?
As late as 1990 OUR government injected more than 1500 six-month old black and Hispanic babies in Los Angeles with an 'experimental' measles vaccine that had never been licensed for use in the United States.
Many people would point to Waco, Ruby Ridge, Kent State or various other recent "conspiratorial" episodes as evidence of OUR governments' self-serving sociopathy. It's unnecessary to do so as one only needs to examine OUR governments' track record and it's all in the public records in libraries and governmental offices - DON'T take my word for it - CHECK IT OUT!!!
I am not saying that Bush did it or had anything to do with it, but I am saying there is more here than the government is allowing us to see or know.

The evidence is really quite conclucsive. The facts coming to light, alos some key people are not as afraid. It is only lack of certain details that seem to be stalling, empeachment, arrests, what ever.
For some poeple this will not only be hard to accept, it could lead to a full blown identidy crisis.
Think from the point of view of say young boomers between 45 and 60 years old. After WW11 they survided (or parents told them) of great depression, two world wars the United States then rebuilds the two nation that declared war on it.(their were reasons that werein the interest of U.S.) still, most people accepted they were doing for pure and noble resons. They were very proud of their countrie, as well they should. Right away the economy was booming and America had this huge middle class of people with disposable income. Buying cars, appliances, times were good, except that COLD WAR, but the U.S built up massive stockspiles of nuclear bombs and kept a trained army with bases all over Europe and Japan.(to protect allies)
So noe thry are living well, Proud of country, and they are loved world over. Plus most do not realize (Iwas amazed at this) American are taught/targeted to believe, America was the only country that had such things like freedom of speech, Press, Religion. I actually read 6months ago that teachers from kindergarten right through high school are not allowed to say or that any other country in the world is better or even equel to America. The reason stated was young peolpe may not be as willing to go to fight wars against countries they feel are just as good as their, even worse better.
So now they have a life time of beliefs, and toss em. Larry King never asks a question that would cause guest emmarassment os arrest. The government truly doesn't give a crap about citizens. Only the big business that will help them get re elected. Some cannot face that. They have rationalized every country invaded, it's poeple devastated as "Noble Intentions gone Wrong" Their trying not to notice the decline in the standard of living. They believe the government will come through before if we just wait the government will fix everything. Who know maybe seeing Cheney on trail in Germany will help. If it makes the news this time. I haven't checked the television yet today, to see if they are finialy going to start saying something. See how roten corperate run media works. This crap has been going unreported for months. With the arrest I should hope something will be mentioned.

While I dislike and distrust George Bush, I definitely DO NOT believe that this administration was behind the attacks of 9/11. I may be proven wrong, but some of these conspiracy theories are lunacy. Examples: the World Trade towers were detonated, burning jet fuel doesn't get hot enough to melt steel, etc. I won't second guess what could have been done to prevent the attacks, whether the warning signs were ignored, etc. One thing is clear, the Bush administration has clearly mismanaged the events since 9/11.
P.S. I watched Loose Change completely after reading the mentions of it made in other responses. I will admit, that there were some interesting speculations - particularly, the flight 93 stuff, but other coincidental "facts" were just that, coincidences. I find it hard to believe that the scores - if not hundreds of people needed to carry out such a conspiracy could all be coerced into silence.

Silly people agree that Bush wasn't responsible ???
Great that makes just about everybody now, doesn't it ?? Except of course, for the leftover inane idiots who can't ever see the truth . Same reason why the unemployment rate will NEVER hit 0% . There's always a very small fraction of people that simply CANNOT BE HELPED !!!

As much as I dislike Bush and his gang of thieves and charlatans - they weren't behind 9/11. Don't you read the news or watch it on tv? It was a bunch of radical Muslims who want to spend eternity with a bunch of virgins.

It's just that some people tend to believe what they hear then what they see ...
for example when someone asks you to follow what they do and then puts their hand at their ear, and at the same time asks you to put your hand on your mouth...
most will put their hands on their mouth...
it's just a politcal scheme so that people would hate Bush... I personally don't really like Bush, but he still managed to control one of the most powerfull country in the world...
