It produces projections due to protoplasmic flow which then fold around and engulf the bacterium (plural: bacteria). Then the bacterium is engulfed (taken into the cytoplasm of the white cell (usually a neutrophil, T lymphocyte or macrophage), as a phagosome (a type of small vacuole). This then becomes a phagolysosome, then a lysosome (lysis = breakdown) containing enzymes including proteases and nucleases that break down (digest) the protein and nuceic acids, respectively of the bacterium, thus killing it.

White blood cells are of several types. Their collective function is to fight incoming foriegn matter including pathogenic organisms including the bacteria. some of the cells are phagocytotic. They engulf bacteria(like amobae) and other invading foreign agents, digest and kill thier toxicity. They include nuetrophils, monocytes and others. The other method of fighting the toxicity of invading pathogenic organisms is the production of specific proteinacious chemicals called as Antibodies. They are cheifly produced by lymphocytes---yet another kind of WBCs. The antibodies are specific for any incoming microrganism. The incoming foriegn matter is called Antigen. The antibody-antigen mechanism is specific like "Lock & Key"
mechanism. Understanding of this phenomenon helped man to synthesize specific vaccines for a number infectious diseases. The defence against incoming pathogens in broad terms is called Immunity.

Both Macrophages, and neutrophils are phagocytes. They engulf bacteria and then enzymes in the cells destroy the bacteria.
