It goes back to the earliest days of animation. Four fingers are just much easier to draw. (As a cartoonist, I can verify this fact).

Early cartoons had to be done cheaply. Four fingers are quicker and easier to draw. (Don’t ask me to explain why that it, but it is true). Since it was easier, it was also much faster and therefore cheaper.

In modern day animation and comic strips four fingers is done more for stylistic and traditionalistic purposes.

Its just harder to draw a real hand then it is a four fingered hand.

cartoonists often do not include the thumb because they do not believe it is a finger and therefore don't want to spend time drawing it in....

but you already knew they were weired :)
