He probably was a fourth son who would inherit nothing from his family or he had lost everything. He got a land grant in the Virgina Colony and moved there.

This is the reason that why most planters came to The Colonies it is also the reason for the plantation society being centered in the south rather than the north that had more group colonial land grants such as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts Bay.
