Typically, people tend toward the neutrals or light greens and yellows. Unfortunately, then the couple ends up with all of this neutral stuff. Maybe instead of buying clothes, focus on buying things all babies and parents can use (diapering items, toys) If you buy toys, be sure to get ones that are developmentally appropriate and recommended for infants to stimulate intellectual and physical development. Contrary to years of surrounding babies in pastel and neutral environments, babies dig bright, bold colors and geometric shapes. From a developmental standpoint, toys that are black, white, and red and other bold colors are best. That soft, white teddy bear really doesn't do anything for a baby.

A gift certificate always works well. Toys R A Billion Dollar Industry, BabiesRUs, Buy Buy Baby, Walmart, Kmart and Target are all carry tons of baby related stuff. Check your local yellow pages to see which store(s) are convient for the parents to get to -- remember new parents don't have a lot of energy left over for shopping.

As for clothing do white, green, yellow, cream, maybe red. Most newborns only need onezies and gowns anyway. Outfits are for later. As for the rest, like bedding, just stick to pretty nuteral stuff like Winnie the Pooh or animals. That goes for both. Then after the baby is born you can add colors that you think are appropriate for that sex.

Toys, clothes (pastels are great: yellow, green, cream, orange, etc. I would even buy blue, but that's just me), pacifiers....
But a big help to parents: Gift cards to department stores, diapers, baby wipes, strollers, play-pens, towels, bibs, car seats, high chairs, baby swings or bouncy-seats, and again diapers. Diapers are killer expensive. So are car seats. You can get a car seat that grows with the baby from birth to toddler years, so mom and dad don't have to buy another one later.
You can also give money to help the parents open a college fund for their baby.

Buy jumpers or crib toys. Some with fish tanks or zoo animals. You can buy white sox and white onesies. Get yellow or white blankets and burp cloths. Get plain bottles and pacifiers without charectors or prints on them. You can get all their bath stuff like shampoo and lotion. White or light green baby towels and washcloths. Get a bottle cleaner. Baby wipes and diapers are all cogender these days. Get a green or khaki plaid print for your carseat and stroller. Boppy pillow with a solid print or baby animals.

The only real thing you have to "worry" about is the clothes really. so in that retrospect, just get neutral stuff. Other than that you can get everything else you need for a baby not to worry. Congrats by the way!

Buy normal baby stuff, like a carseat, a bassinet, a crib, and pacifiers, but don't buy girly stuff that's all pink, or boy stuff that's all blue. Buy in yellow, green, and cream, but make sure that they're light colors and not too wild. Good luck!

Just buy basics, onesies and sleep and plays in neutral colors, only size Newborn or 0-3 months. that way you can go shopping after the baby is born.
