Your First Project
* Find some yarn that's not too fuzzy, so you'll be able to see what you're doing. Look on the label and get the needle size they recommend for the yarn. US size 10 1/2 needles (6.5 mm) are ideal for beginners, but you can use any size needles. The smaller the needles, the longer it will take you to make something substantial. Size 8 needles are about as small as you'd probably want to go as a beginner, if you've got a scarf in mind.
* Cast on 20 stitches. Knit every row, or, if you're ambitious, include purl stitches in a regular pattern. (To see demos and learn about some basic stitch patterns, go here.) When you've created a square, bind off. If you're using cotton yarn, this makes a great dish cloth or hot pad. For other ideas on what to do with this square, check out this thread on the forum. Or, if you're on a roll, keep knitting past the square until you have a scarf!

You don't, you "knit". Get a book or a patient friend to show you how.
You will probably find your local library/adult education centre can help you out with details.
