If it's powder detergent, before - so it doesn't clump and stick to and stain colored clothes. If it's liquid detergent, probably doesn't matter.

I now have a front-loading machine, so the detergent goes into a small compartment with the bleach and fabric softener, and the machine controls when they get added to the laundry cycle.
When I had a top-loading machine, I always put detergent (powdered or liquid) in the bottom of the machine, then added about 1/2 gallon of hot or warm water to the dissolve or dilute the detergent. Then I added the dirty laundry and let the machine go. That's what I do if I ever need to use a laundromat.
Previously, I tossed in the clothes first, poured in the detergent, then turned on the machine. Later, I noticed that occasionally I would find spots of undissolved soap, or worse, colors would fade in certain spots where the soap had collected on color-sensitive fabrics. So I decided to pre-dissolve the detergent and eliminate that problem.

My washer has a space to put detergent in after it has begun cycling. When I used other washers, I put liquid detergent in after the clothes. When using powder, I put it in before the clothes and agitated the water a little to move it around. That way no powder left on the clothes.

If I'm using a powdered detergent, I add the clothes after the soap and water have mixed to prevent the detergent granules from burning holes in the fabric before they get dissolved. With a liquid detergent, it doesn't matter.

I start the water running and then I add the liquid soap and any other additives. After the wash tub is about half full, I add the clothes. I do this because years ago I used to have a problem with the soap clumping on some of the clothes and when I would take them out of the washer they would have soap clumped on them. It's just my personal preference.

Always before!!!!- I was getting stains on some of my clothes and I couldn't figure out what was causing them. I found out it was my detergent, because it was sitting there on my clothes without any water for too long. I always turn on the water, put in detergent, and then clothes.

I always to the same thing. I put the softner in the ball after I turn the water on and then I drop in the ball. Since I only use liquid soap I put it in and throw in the cup (no mess). Then I wait til the water is half full or more and then I add the clothes. If I am washing whites I use my soap cup before I add the soap to add the bleach so I know how much I use.

Before! Let the water run a bit, then add the soap to the consistentcy of a bubble bath, then put the clothes in. I have put soap on my clothes, after I loaded the machine, only to have the soap stain the clothes!

Well, I put the detergent before the clothes put I don't think it matters...It really depends on what type of clothes you put in the washer(delegates,whites,etc.).
