Jimmy "the Weisel" Frattiano claimed that Giancana (the then Boss of Bosses out of Chicago) gave the go ahead for Marcello (of New Orleans) to carry out the assassination. It involved Castro (who had a grudge after finding out the CIA was behind the Bay of Pigs Invastion) so he got a patsy (Oswald) from the Russians to carry-out the deed. Marcello's beef was a result of RFK's investigations into organized crime. To cover the link to the Mafia, Marcello had Jack Ruby (a two bit night club owner in the Marcello organization) take out Oswald to seal his lips.
Giancana's beef with JFK was his impression that JFK renigged on promises to leave the Mafia alone since he felt he pulled strings in Chicago to get him elected.
Several weeks before the assassination, Oswald met with Cuban agents in Mexico. For inexplicable reasons, the FBI agents who were following up the Cuban connection as a part of the Warren Commission investigation, were recalled back by FBI Central office.

Probably not Lee Harvey Oswald.
He was supposed to have shot at the car three times in about five seconds unisg an old Dragonov bolt action rifle that was recovered from the book store. Although he was a former US marine, firing three rounds at a moving target at that distance with a bolt action rifle and getting three confirmed hits is, due to the nature of the weapon, impossible.
Behind the affair I suspect there will never be a definative answer, but one of the most likely candidates is the CIA. Post bay of Pigs Fiasco and amongst ideas of exploding cigars, mined conches and poisioned wetsuits (Castro loved freediving) the CIA were hell bent upon getting Castro. JFK, meanwhile had started reigning them in, worried that they were dictating forign policy to him, and had started making moves towards castro, as had castro towards the white house.
The CIA were annoyed about this and decided to have someone who they could better controll in the white house.
But that is pure speculation... Hope that helps, most public librarys (unless bliar has closed yours down yet or awapped all the books for computers) usually have a couple of books on JFK, or the cuban missile crisis that are worth reading if you want to know more.
Take it easy

I have a different theory possibly some of you were not born at
the time of JFK's shooting.Jack Ruby who delivered Oswald to
his maker actually say's on film, if everybody involved on this
case lives to be a thousand know one will find out who the killer
is.Imagine the scenario JFK is president, Bobby his brother is
Judge Advocate General, possibly as powerful as his brother,
J Edgar Hoover head of FBI, who hated the Kennedy's add
also a certain popular singer, that was regularly accused of
organised crime(ie link's with The Mob) who definitely delighted
in rubbing shoulders with people like JFK, possibly as a means
to achieve an end. then I think you might be getting nearer to the
culprit

You should watch "JFK: Beyond Conspiracy" on the History Channel. It goes through the different conspiracy theories, like the Soviets, Fidel Castro, and the Mob. It shows computer animations of Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963 with frame by frame analysis of the shooting, and concludes that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

I am totally of the opinion that LBJ had something to do with it.
But to answer you question with a more literal bent (because you know someone has to), it was the person that pulled the trigger. There. Got that out of the way.
