I have never gone to Times Square to see the ball drop - it's too crowded, it's cold, and you have to stand there for hours to wait for 10 seconds of excitement and then it's over.
But every year at least a million people do turn out for this event
Did you go to Times Square this New Years Eve?
Did you like it?
Or did you think it was lame?

Good question, Faders Girl - the ball dropping is pretty lame, even with the confetti and the live TV coverage. But it's been a New Years Eve thing here since 1911 (apparently, the trade association for the Broadway Theaters started doing it to get publicity for Times Square - as you see, it worked very well).

Scott - they only have 5 hours of entertainment if you get there at 10:30 AM and get right by the MTV stage.
If you get there any later than 4 PM, you will be too far from the MTV stage to see anything - all you will see is the back of the head of the person in front of you.

I've never been and I don't plan on going. I'm with you on this one, I can't see standing there for hours just to see a ball drop when I can be at home doing what I want until the big moment.

Yep, just got home (to my city). We got to Times Square about 10:30am, waited, had to squeeze in to get a pretty good spot (immediately to the left of the MTV camera platform on the street). First time and it was great!
Plus it's not just 10 seconds of excitement. Starting about 5pm, there was entertainment. With a countdown to new years for different parts of the world every hour, to rehersals of bands and other stuff, you can easily keep occupied.

^ No, this is not what I'm referring to. By entertainment I mean the sound and video on all of the screens. Barely anyone is close enough to be right in front of the ABC or Pontiac stage (there is no MTV stage outside) but they show the performances/rehersals on several screens throughout the whole area along with very loud audio.
Not to mention the recorded music, hourly countdowns, celebrity showings, etc.

I live on the west coast. I did not go.
But....If I lived there, I still wouldn't go, for the same reasons you stated. Call me a home body. That's where I'm warm, comfortable and safe.

Nope, and didn't watch on TV, either.
I dislike large, noisy crowds of strangers, especially when many of them are drunk.
Kind of like Mardi Gras. If others enjoy it, fine by me, but I really don't see much point.
