It seems that in American culture it has been deemed unattractive to be "pale". That's also what the media portrays, a whole world of tanned people. However, what I don't understand is why they do it if they know it's not healthy for their skin. It's been proved that tanning causes skin cancer, it also produces little brown spots that look like freckles all over your skin.

Here in CT most of the people who go to tanning beds are Italian. They're naturally the same color I am, but when these gals tan they turn orangey, whereas I would go the same amount of time and turn brown (I'm half Eastern Cherokee.) I didn't get why they looked so odd until I read something about the two types of melanin.
But I thought to myself, "Don't they realize they look orange?" I don't get why someone would settle for orange skin. If you can't get brown, don't try it.

Girl, you think that is perplexing... there is also a small community of girls in Japan that also get tans. She is known as "Ganguro." And this also includes guys as well who are a part of the culture.
The basic look consists of dyed hair (often of several colors) and a deep tan. Black and white eyeliner, false eyelashes, platform shoes, and brightly-colored outfits complete the ganguro look. Also typical of ganguro fashion are tie-dyed sarongs, miniskirts, and lots of bracelets, rings and necklaces. The deep ganguro tan is in direct conflict with traditional Japanese ideas of feminine beauty.
Read more about it at the link provided below. VERY interesting. There are other websites as well all over the net.

Tanning has just always been the thing with white girls. I don't know why, i like black women anyway so white girls tanned or not don't really look good to me, but you hear alot of white guys say they like hispanic women, so maybe white girls are trying to look hispanic. I don't really know.

Because dark skin is more beautiful than white skin;) so, white girls try to get what nature hasn't given them in another way;)...We, white women have to face the truth, that our skin is not as beautiful as dark skin, so we just try to make it better;)...Exaggerating does actually look funny, whereas a bit of moderate tanning looks quite nice;)

Tanning produces certain vitamins and people who get depressed in the winter can get addicted to tanning beds.

Just look at advertising.... tan is "healthy". At least this is what we are made to think. In actuality it is just the opposite as many find out in later life.

Everyone looks better when they get a little sun. Your skin looks more radiant and toned. Too much sun (overtanning) looks tacky and unhealthy, though.
