Hi Candor105! Name changes come under uniform law and are generally the same for every state. Most lawyers will handle this for around $50. It involves preparation of a name-change petition and placing an ad in a local paper 1 day each week for 3 weeks to see if there are any objections. If there are no objections, then the lawyer files the petition and the judge signs the petition and it is final. The lawyer will give you at least 10 copies, which you must have notarized, and which you will then take to get a new driver's lisence, a new social security card and so forth. If you need more copies, the lawyer will usually give you as many as you need. (I also recommend that you get new diplomas with your new name on them by going back to your schools and requesting them; they will want notarized copies; they will usually do this for free) Good Luck!
