Because once you have eaten your cake it has gone and you don't have it in front of you anymore. So you can't eat your cake and still have it.

I don't know where it came from. But it has been around for years. What they mean by that is usually a married man (or woman) is having an affair with someone else. So that is where the expression came from. Your cake is your marriage, because you have everything and take everything for granted. Your piece of cake is the affair you are having. It is also called best of both worlds. and that is only because something at the home front isn't right so they wonder off to find something else. Or just to make sure they still attract the opposite sex.

I heard it as i was growing up , but if you think about it , it is stupid, Give em enough rope and they will hang their self. If it cost a nickle to sh-t they would throw up. I grew up hearing alot of those. I think that everyone that has a cake would want to eat it. Just don't give them the cake!

It means that if you have a cake, and you eat it, don't expect to still have it later. It's gone. In life terms, it means don't try to get over on others and expect to respected. It's like having a girlfriend, cheating on her, and expect her to stay with you.

its having something that you should't have, like being spoiled, you don't only want to use it you want to keep it also and take it away from others. it comes from people cheating, they have a good thing but yet want more.
